Reel Inspiration – The Man Who Fell To Earth

They’re spitting feathers at home, so august humanoid alien Thomas Newton (the beautifully turned out David Bowie in his first big screen role) pilots himself to Planet Earth in search of a drop of water, hitting the allegorical jackpot when he splashes down in a lake somewhere in the wastes of the Mid-West.

Coming – as tends to be the case with aliens – from a planet that’s light years ahead of our own in every way, the extraterrestrial with the soft Sarf London accent puts his brimming-over brain to good use building the biggest hi-tech conglomerate in the world to put himself in a position to buy up enough briny to save his people.

All proceeds swimmingly until he discovers the grabbier side of big business, human hanky-panky with Mary-Lou (Candy Clark) and, leaving the water behind, a taste for the harder stuff in the form of Gin and Tonic.

Nicolas Roeg’s the Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) is a stunning film in every way.

Screen Time

Our dichroic screen has responded splendidly to the grey skies overhead and bit of rain we’ve had on the Row of late.

As you might have seen, the screen pretty much splits the flagship Savile Row store in two, separating our seasonal collection from our year-round, core line classics.

Its shifts in colour and radiance come with changes in the intensity of the light. That and the filters, which allow certain, selected colours to shine through while bouncing other, unwanted ones, out.

Here, in full bloom, it sets off an olive Harris tweed jacket nicely.

Reel Inspiration – 9 1/2 Weeks

Cue nine and a half weeks of naughtiness as assertive Wall Street broker John (Mickey Rourke) and game gallery assistant Elizabeth (Kim Basinger) lock eyes over a propitious, intricately intertwined pile of bare-skinned legs, breasts and other bits on the poultry stall of the local market.

Bullwhips, a bit of bondage and the blindfolded El Bulli-style get-this surprise tasting session all add up to a smorgasbord of soft porn, before our allotted, titular time is up and the recently divorced Elizabeth ducks out ahead of the game, in control and with her integrity intact.

Time has inevitably tamed the sexual shenanigans of Adrian Lyne’s 9 1/2 Weeks (1986), but Mickey Rourke’s wardrobe – not least his double-breasted overcoat – stands up as well as it always did.

Richard To The Rescue – Cravats

Michael Monk recently put the following to Richard in the Savile Row store: “I saw these cravats in your AW14 London Collections: Men show. When and where should I be wearing one? I feel there’s a lot of scope to get it wrong.”

Richard replied thus: “They’ve had a bad press for a while, haven’t they? They’re seen as being a bit what everyone now calls ‘Gin ‘n’ Jag’, a bit Home Counties golf club, a bit brass-buttoned blazer and Panama hat. I don’t have anything against brass-buttoned blazers, Panama hats or, as you can see, cravats. But on their own. All at once and you’re conforming to dangerous stereotype.

“Just think of a cravat as a more casual alternative to a tie. Or consider one when you’re thinking of not wearing a tie. Cravats are another way of adding a bit of colour and contrast. And one thing that no one seems to mention about them, particularly silk cravats, is what an absolute pleasure they are to wear. There are few better sensations than having a nice bit of loosely knitted silk around the neck.”

If you ever find yourself wondering about what you are or are considering wearing and would like Richard to ride to your rescue with some sound advice, please contact us via Twitter.
