Richard To The Rescue – A Jacket With Jeans

Our customer Stephen McCarthy is in a quandary about jackets for slightly more casual wear.

“I want to get a new jacket to wear with jeans. However, some jackets seem bum freezer short. Is this just a current trend? And if I buy such a jacket, will I look out of date in two years time?”

Over to who else but Richard: “Ultimately, these things always come down to personal taste and, importantly, what suits your height and build. But if you’re talking about something really short and boxy I fear you might look a little out of date on putting it on for the first time, never mind in a couple of years. Better a bomber jacket if you want to freeze your bum.

“I’ve been wearing a beautiful, timeless rust Harris tweed jacket (pictured) with Richard James jeans recently. It’s cut from what has become known as our modern classic Hyde block, which means it’s quite slim and waisted. And – and this might interest you – it’s also the easiest of our jackets to alter. We can expertly and invisibly alter pretty much any part of a jacket from chipping in the shoulders to nipping in the waist and, of course, making it shorter in the sleeves or body. So my answer is to not be dictated to by the dictums of current trends and choose a jacket that you feel good in and, if you want, make some minor tweaks and changes to it to really make it your own ”

Scratching your head about matters sartorial? Why not let us know about it and see if Richard can come to your rescue?

Fireworks In Lithuania

Lithuania is the only place to be on September 24th for fireworks fanciers.

Now in its eighth year, the Vilnius Fejerija festival is known for putting on Europe’s premier pyrotechnic show, lighting up the sky over the ancient, altogether alluring Lithuanian capital with a coruscating cornucopia of kaleidoscopic colour.

Were you attending and wondering what to wear, Irene has put together a practical, adaptable look (and, as you can see, illustrated it) that we think will work very well for the occasion. A rust Harris tweed jacket, a 30-gauge Scottish-made cashmere polo, slim Japanese selvedge denim jeans…

At the Savile Row store and Richard James Online now.

All online orders addressed to London postcodes – E, SE, SW, W, NW, N – made by 12 noon UK time from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) can be delivered on the same day.

The Denim Jacket

Our new denim jacket arrived at the store on Savile Row and at Richard James Online this week.

A sharply detailed everyday-classic.

And, possibly, a companion piece for our jeans, which are also made in England from the very same Japanese selvedge denim.

Simply the best denim there is, machine-stitched by real craftsmen.

FIT: Cut semi-slim for a clean-lined profile, yet with enough room to wear over a light knit in the cooler months. Cold washed once for ease of movement and a natural fit.

FABRIC: Made from a medium-weight 13oz shuttle-loom-woven rope-dyed selvedge denim from Okayama – aka Denim Central – Japan. The more you wear it, the more you will get out of it.

DETAIL: Machine stitched in England by real craftsmen and finished with subtly monogrammed Richard James Savile Row nickel buttons. Working cuffs and back adjusters. Classic pleated front.

All online orders addressed to London postcodes – E, SE, SW, W, NW, N – made by 12 noon UK time from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) can be delivered on the same day.

Reel Inspiration – Two-Lane Blacktop

A pair of nameless proto-grunge seventies slackers and their super-souped up primer grey ’55 Chevy are challenged to one of those existential odysseys of a cross-country race to Washington DC by the dapper G.T.O (Warren Oates), a man who has taken his name from the purring Pontiac G.T.O that he drives.  The winner gets the loser’s wheels.

Hopping aboard for the ride and playing the spanner in the works between the driver (James ‘You’ve Got a Friend” Taylor) and the mechanic (the late Dennis Wilson; yes, he of the Beach Boys) is the girl, the lovely, lamented Laurie Bird.

A fine study of denim courtesy of those in the Chevy and, by contrast, a super selection of cashmere knits from the man in the G.T.O in Monte Hellman’s 1971 cult-classic American road movie Two-Lane Blacktop.

Reel Inspiration – The Loveless

A bunch of bad-boy bikers with the one, obligatory bleached blonde in tow descend on a small southern town for what their leader, the vain, camply cool Vance (Willem Dafoe, in his feature debut), quaintly terms “a weekend in the country.”

Needless to say, the townsfolk don’t much take to this intrusion and things come to a head when Vance becomes entangled with the local Lolita, whose father is a keen advocate of the Second Amendment.

The Loveless (1982; directed by Monty Montgomery and, making her feature debut, Kathryn Bigelow) is a sharply stylised, sexually charged homage to ’50s biker films. Lushly coloured as to verge on the hallucinatory and set to a relentless, wilfully saucy soundtrack featuring Little Richard, Brenda Lee, The Diamonds and Robert Gordon (who also appears as gang member Davis), there is possibly no other film in existence, The Wild One included, that better showcases classic, leather and denim biker chic.
