Reel Inspiration – Angel Heart

Adroitly dishevelled Brooklyn private dick Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) is summoned by the distinctly devilish Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro – clip below), who presses $5,000 on him to get on the tail of debt-dodging big band singer Johnny Favourite, a man you immediately sense was well advised to make for the long grass.

Angel’s investigations lead him to Harlem and then on to Algiers, Louisiana – Steamy South Central – where he encounters sorcery and sauciness aplenty, not least in the loose-limbed form of keen voodoo booster Epiphany Proudfoot (Lisa Bonet).

Part thriller, part horror, Alan Parker’s dark, sharply styled Angel Heart (1987) grips from start to finish, when Angel – who sports a fine line in crumpled warm-weather seersucker – discovers he was sitting on the answer all along.

An unbarred, unrated version of the film, featuring Rourke and Bonet’s full-on hotel room tryst, complete with teardrops of rain and blood dripping from the ceiling, is now available.

Reel Inspiration – The Limey

Mono-monikered Wilson (Terence Stamp) is knocking on a bit and knows it, but not so much (he likes to think) to keep him from exacting one pressing and unapologetically pitiless act of revenge.

Fresh from the clink, the intensely contemplative and not overly chirpy cockney career criminal makes for Los Angeles to investigate the death of his estranged daughter, Jenny, who, he soon discovers, was romantically intertwined with an ageing record producer and legendary lothario called Valentine (Peter Fonda). “You tell him. You tell him I’m coming!” exclaims Wilson (see the clip) after proudly demonstrating to a trio of Valentine’s associates that advancing years have yet to hinder his ability to handle himself. “Tell him I’m ****ing coming!”

More than a classic tale of payback and salute to films of that ilk (for Wilson think Lee Marvin’s Walker in John Boorman’s 1967 neo-noir Point Blank), Steven Soderbergh’s taut, superbly stylish The Limey (1999) deftly reflects on the passing of time and those moments and opportunities lost to it, not least by neatly using footage of the young Stamp in Poor Cow (1967) as Wilson and dropping references to Fonda’s role in the period defining Easy Rider (1969).

Mood Landing

Here’s the mood board for our Spring/Summer ’14 collection, which is available now at  the Savile Row store, stockists and Richard James Online.

Basically, as the idea is with mood boards, it’s designed to put us in the right frame of mind and on the right track with regards to colours, textures and the general feel of what we’re aiming to capture when working on a collection.

The theme of the SS14 collection is Sundown, and below you can read the traditionally slightly baroque words that sum it up:

This is the hour for strange effects in light and shade – enough to make a colourist go delirious.

Sundown Lights by Walt Whitman.

Our Spring/Summer ’14 collection captures that cool, colour-drenched hour when the spent summer sun slips away from another long day and the dark of night steals in, bringing with it a fresh energy and delicious sense of expectation.

Sundown is a prismatic prelude to the hidden pleasures of the evening ahead, a time to reappear refreshed and bask in the warm afterglow of the day under a sky swathed in deep reds, pinks and oranges.

Fleeting pastel pinks, yellows and blues of sun-bleached parasols contrast sharply with a parade of kaleidoscopic, colour-blocked cocktails. The vividly  orchestrating sky gives way to the cool, mirrored blue stillness of a now empty pool. Poolside is the place to promenade as a soundtrack of ice happily tinkling on glass cuts through the excited hubbub.

This is a markedly sensuous collection that is defined by exquisitely light fabrics, soft, largely unstructured and unlined precision-cut tailoring and bold, playful prints and strokes of colour.

Cool Wool, fine worsted-spun cashmere, cotton and linen, and cotton, linen and silk mixes feature prominently throughout tailoring and casual wear with beautifully natural flax and silk mixes and wool, silk and cashmere jersey piques adding subtle texture and form.

Tiny sailing and rowing boat and rolling wave prints add a jaunty touch of playfulness to shirts and accessories. Floral and sharp geometric prints bring points of focus and brilliance.

Set yourself for the stunning spectacle of sundown.

Cool Aid

Esquire UK’s Object of Desire No. 26: Cool Wool jacket by Richard James

Like Esquire UK says, wool isn’t something you’d readily associate with your average summer wardrobe.

But this Spring/Summer ’14 jacket – Object of Desire No. 26 in the at-the-newsstands-now August issue of Esquire UK – isn’t made of your average wool, but Cool Wool, the finest, lightest, coolest, all-natural, wholly sustainable fabric you can put on your back when the mercury is rising.

“Ten years ago a wool suit was heavy and now it is the lightest thing in the world,” says Richard, exaggerating only slightly, but explaining the jacket’s airborne appearance in the above picture. “Innovation of wool is not over yet. It will still be surprising us in another 10 years.”

Available as the top half of a Savile Row suit (below, as seen in our S’S’14 LC:M show) from the Savile Row shop and stockists from January 2014.
