Article: Wool Month

Wool Month
Just one sheep on show (below) for Wool Month this year. A little bit different from 2010, which saw the windows of the Savile Row store stuffed full of ovines of the inflatable variety (above).
That was the event’s very first year, an initiative of the newly launched Campaign for Wool, set up by His Majesty King Charles III (then HRH The Prince of Wales) to celebrate the remarkable qualities of a natural fibre that tailors such as ourselves can’t do without.
Sixteen years on, Wool Month has become a firm fixture on the Row, and even though this year’s flock has shrunk to one, our support for the cause hasn’t.

There are some 15,000 cloth samples at Richard James House, and the vast majority of them are wool or wool blends. There’s actually not an awful lot that we make without wool.
And there are good reasons for that. Wool is great to cut and shape, and it drapes beautifully. It comes in whatever weight and whichever colour you want. It keeps you cool when it is hot and warm when it is cold. Being renewable, biodegradable and durable, it is also sustainable. A good wool suit isn’t for a season; it’s for a lifetime.
So do drop by before the end of the month if you’d like to say hello to our solitary sheep while looking through our cloth books.
